Published on October 16, 2019

Welcome to the desert of real…Mr. Harris. On Tuesday, exciting news came from the Matrix, announcing that Neil Patrick Harris is the latest addition to the franchise, joining the ensemble cast for the upcoming fourth installment.

Lana Wachowski is also returning and on board to write and direct the Warner Bros. film, along with Aleksandar Hemon (Love Island) and David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) who co-wrote the script with Wachowski.

Harris, known for his roles in How I Met Your Mother and Gone Girl, joins Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, as well as Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), who was tapped as one of the leads last week.

Additionally, Jada Pinkett Smith is currently in negotiations to reprise her role as Captain Niobe in the upcoming installment, according to Deadline.

While the plot details to the fourth installment are still unknown, rumors have it that the film will center around a young Morpheus (previously portrayed by Laurence Fishburne, but sources close to the film would not confirm Harris’ upcoming role.

It will be exciting to see how Harris portrays his upcoming role in the sci-fi digital thriller, as the last “true” sci-fi film Harris was part of dates back to 1997 with Starship Troopers.

The film’s production is expected to begin in early 2020.

Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Wachowski said in a statement. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

For those of you who have been wondering what the hell took so long to “plug back” into the Matrix, you can attribute that to the legal battle over the producing rights, which slowed down the project.

Collectively, the previous three Matrix films—“The Matrix,” “The Matrix Reloaded,” and “The Matrix Revolutions” have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office, with all three written and directed by Lana and her sister, Lilly.

As of the date of this article, there hasn’t been much information on whether Lilly will be involved with this installment, but it seems unlikely.

Grit Daily has reached out to Mr. Harris’ representatives, but has not received a response as of the date of this article.

Andrew "Drew" Rossow is a former contract editor at Grit Daily.
