Meet The Device That Gives You Music Fingers – Literally

Published on March 9, 2020

Music Fingers was founded by a group of music-loving friends eager to make the process of music production quicker, easier, and more convenient. A wearable device that syncs to an app on your phone, Music Fingers encourages music-heads around the world to play music when they want, wherever they want; no computers, no instruments, no studios needed; it’s music at your fingertips. Just the thimble-shaped slip on and your phone. Fascinating, right? But what exactly does this contribution towards accessibility in music production mean for the industry?

How does Music Fingers work?

Music Fingers is simply this: a small slip on device shaped like a thimble to fit snug on your fingers, and a downloadable app compatible with your iPhone or Android device. The slip on device has two buttons, one is a primary sound and the other is a secondary sound; both from which you can assign via your smartphone app. You can select from a wide range of instruments, samples, or loops from the app—or import your own sounds—assign them to a primary or secondary sound on your device, and begin tapping away.

Technology has allowed us to shift the way we craft our music; we’ve gone from live music and musicians relying on the instruments present on stage, to DJ’s and beat-makers relying on the endless opportunities presented by their music production software.

While this may have been unpleasant news for musicians, this was also a time for artists to explore what they could create without limitation. We’ve formed new genres, all the while, almost destroying the concept altogether; with all the possibilities of mixing, sampling, and blending aspects from every scene, how can you label something that simply cannot be labelled?

Production in the digital age.

Initially, this shift toward a new way of making music received a bit of flack; DJ’s were frowned upon, synthesizers and mix-tables were considered cheating. But as we’ve grown more familiar with this kind of production, people have come to see that this technology isn’t cheating— it’s a means of crafting a fresh perspective on music and allow anyone with a computer at home to try it out for themselves.

With this kind of encouragement to give the art of music a try, the birth of Music Fingers will only further promote listeners, amateur producers, and perhaps even established producers to make music on the go. What sets this device apart from other music production platforms is its portability and wildly appealing convenience factor.

While this concept of music at your fingertips may not compare in sophistication or offer the same possibilities that working on say, the respectable digital audio workstation Ableton may offer, it’s still capable of producing fully-fledged beats. Whether or not you succeed at composing something good…well, that’s all up to talent.
