Can We Please Have The ‘MacGruber’ TV Show Right Now?

Published on April 10, 2020

MacGruber is peak cinema. Of all the 21st century comedies, the SNL spinoff is one of the most joy-inducing movies out of the bunch. It’s irresistible. The comedy only gets better as the years go by, too. None of its jokes go out of time or style. The Will Forte-led movie wasn’t a hit at the box-office, but it was a big hit in all our hearts. For years, there was talk of a sequel, but now, it looks like more MacGruber adventures are coming to streaming.

A MacGruber TV Show!

NBC has a new streaming service because everyone and their grandfather now has their own streaming service. It’s called… Peacock. Honestly, not a very good name for a streaming service, but if they stream a MacGruber TV show, who cares what the platform is called? The MacGruber show is the golden goose of their potential lineup, even though they’ll stream the forever popular The Office. Peacock was going to have complete access to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer, as well, until they were postponed due to the coronavirus.

The Latest on MacGruber

So, what exactly is going on with the highly-anticipated, must-see MacGruber TV show? According to star and co-writer Will Forte, the MacGruber crew are almost done with the scripts. The show doesn’t have a greenlight to shoot yet, though, Forte told Collider:

“Right now we are finishing the last scripts of an eight-episode series of MacGruber, which fingers crossed will be shot in the fall. We don’t officially know that we’re greenlit yet, but we’re very excited about the stuff we’ve written so far, and so far we’re going ahead as if it’s still going on. But who knows, with the current situation in the world, who knows if it gets pushed back. And everything could always just go kaput as per MacGruber, but it’s something we’re hoping to do and moving towards.”

A lot of projects are on hold or without much momentum at the moment due to COVID-19.. Projects are still being cast and set up, but many have stalled. It sounds like MacGruber will have to wait and see if he’ll live to save or ruin another day.

Go Watch MacGruber 10 More Times

Right now is the perfect time to just sit back and watch MacGruber on a loop Clockwork Orange-style. That movie is pure hilarity with such childlike imagination. It’s an effective parody of action-comedies, and yet is still its own fantastic version of an action-comedy. Forte and all involved are constantly throwing everything they got into the kitchen sink, and magically, it all sticks. MacGruber is… the hero we need.

What Else to Know About Peacock

All of NBC’s shows and Universal’s classic movies will be available on Peacock, unless a competing streaming service or platform already has a title in their library for a while. Last year, NBC announced some major league titles for Peacock, including a new Battlestar Galactica from Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) and an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s “A Brave New World.”

Peacock has also teamed up with two powerhouses, Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) and Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), on creating brand new shows. While there are just too many streaming platforms and options right now, it sounds like Peacock will have enough content to stand out. Especially if they greenlight the MacGruber show.
