Last year, Kevin Smith returned to his View Askewniverse with the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. The sequel has been well-received by fans as Smith tours the country screening the movie and delivering lengthy Q&A’s. The tour is still ongoing, but Smith is already thinking about the future and resurrecting old characters of his. Currently, he’s got Clerks III and Mallrats 2 on his mind.
The Latest on Mallrats
For years now, Smith has been talking about making a sequel to his cult comedy from 1995, starring Jason Lee and Jeremy London as two meandering and talkative buddies spending far too much time at the mall. They go on a typical Kevin Smith adventure, involving Jay and Silent Bob. The sequel’s title? Twilight of the Mallrats. In an Instagram post, Smith detailed his desire to direct the sequel along with Clerks III in 2020.
The History of Mallrats 2
Since 2015, Smith has been toying with the idea of writing and directing a sequel to one of his fan-favorite comedies. Although the sequel failed to interest investors, Smith kept knocking. After the success of Smith’s Red State and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot roadshows, maybe it’ll convince some investors to go for Mallrats 2.
The Story of Mallrats 2
Smith is always sharing the latest news on whatever he’s working on online. Sometimes he shares a surprising amount of information, including the whole plot he came up with for Mallrats 2. In 2016, he detailed the entire story:
“So it takes place as the mall is about to close and Brody Bruce, the Jason Lee character, is throwing his… he’s got a comic book store, Body Bruce’s Secret Stash, which we had introduced in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He has moved it into the mall and he’s throwing this Mallathon Comic Con to try to keep the mall alive. He’s like the people in Back to the Future – ‘Save the clock tower’ – he’s trying to save the mall and shit… The whole place finally has a crowd in it for the first time in years and the movie is stolen from Die Hard so in the middle of the Comic Con terrorists take over the mall and so originally the title of the script was Mallrats 2: Die Hard in a Mall. I don’t think Fox is going to let us call it that so we might have to call it something else, but Brody teams up with everyone you remember and love from this movie, 18 characters from this movie come back in Mallrats 2 and then we add another generation as well, their kids as well.”
The Last Decade for Kevin Smith
Smith had a wild and bumpy last ten years as a filmmaker. He challenged himself more than ever and went outside his comfort zone with Red State, Tusk, and, yes, Yoga Hosers. They weren’t near the quality of his talky ‘90s movies, but his ambition was always apparent and admirable. He wasn’t resting on his laurels, that’s for certain. Still, it’s hard not to miss the Smith that gave us Dogma, Chasing Amy, and Clerks when he was at the top of his game and his voice was more enjoyable than ever. Maybe with Clerks III, we’ll hear that wise and crass voice again.
