Anyone familiar with the geniusbrains that sit inside the Smith children won’t be surprised to hear any of this.
Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, has been cast to play a young Kanye West in a new Showtime series that explores an alternate reality. The show will be called “Omniverse” and will explore different modes of perception. The half hour anthology series is being produced by Smith’s company, which is called Westbrook Studios. The show will also feature production credits from legendary pop industry manager Scooter Braun, under his company SB Productions. Braun currently serves as the manager for some of Hollywood’s biggest names, from Justin Bieber to Ariana Grande, and even Kanye West himself. Anything under the SB Productions name is going to be big. And with a name like Jaden Smith fronting the project, odds are it will be weird, too.
The gist of “Omniverse” is to explore an alternate reality and imagine those stories in a physical sphere. Smith’s version of Kanye West is set to explore ego throughout the first season of the half hour-each anthology series. Kanye West himself will serve as an executive producer of the show, alongside Lee Sung Jin, who is also set to hold a writing credit on the show. This is the first time Kanye has ventured into the television world. But with the success of his offshoot projects like Yeezy for Adidas, there’s no doubt that West will pour his heart, soul, and bank account into the project.
“I’m honored and thrilled to be collaborating with everyone involved to present an alternate world through the eyes of a young man somewhere in the multiverse who happens to also be a Kanye West,” Lee said to Deadline of the new series. “Omniverse is not set in our world nor about our world’s Kanye West as we aim to add a new spin on alternate realities, consciousness, and push the limits of half hour narrative,” Lee continued to Deadline.
This isn’t the first foray that Smith has made into the entertainment industry. Like his famous father, Jaden Smith has a promising future in the rap world. At just 20, Smith has already performed at Coachella after carving out a spot for himself within the music industry. His first acting role, though, was alongside his father in The Pursuit of Happiness. The film earned Smith an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.
It would be easy to classify any of the Smith children as celebrity children that became artists by association. But that isn’t the case with Jaden—or his sister Willow, another artist herself. Both Jaden and Willow have branded themselves as deep thinkers and creators of deeply esoteric content. If you haven’t caught up with Willow since her hair flipping days, we suggest you do.
Smith, who just released a surprise EP ahead of his new album, credits West as one of his biggest artistic inspiration. Smith’s new EP, “ERYS IS COMING” is available now for streaming on Spotify and signals a new era of music for the young artist. “Omniverse” will be coming to Showtime, but the release dates and more information have not been released.
