Today Instagram unveiled its latest foray into the digital retail space, by introducing Checkout — a feature that will allow users to checkout directly within the app. The feature streamlines and simplifies the way users buy from brands, all without ever leaving the app.

Beginning in June 2018,  Instagram introduced a Stories tag, by allowing users to tap on a shopping bag icon to learn more about that product. Soon after, Instagram introduced a new shopping channel feature on their Explore page. As a result, instead of having to navigate through a chunky mobile web flow as users had in the past, Instagram’s Checkout feature allows users to buy from brands they discover.

According to company statistics, 130 million users per month now click to reveal shopping tags in posts, up from 90 million in September.

Ryan Pabelona, Director of Performance Marketing of the fashion retailer Revolve–one of the first businesses people in the US can buy from–expressed the excitement of the partnership in Instagram’s recent blog post, saying:

“We’re incredibly excited to partner with Instagram and be among the first to offer in-app checkout to our followers! At our core, REVOLVE aspires to create a seamless, elevated shopping experience for our customer.

With Instagram’s new checkout interface, we’re able to better serve our millennially minded audience by providing a new, fast and easy purchase method on a platform where they are already engaging with our content and discovering our products.”

As for the checkout process, users will enter their name, email, billing details and shipping address. Instagram will securely store your information. It will also provide updates on shipment and delivery with up-to-date notifications through Instagram. Methods of payments will include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and PayPal.
