Luxury French designer brand Hermès is expanding its traditional fashion-based leather goods to include a cosmetics and skincare range. This is the first time in the brand’s 183 year-long tenure that they have announced the addition of a makeup line.
The first installment to the Hermès cosmetics line will be 24 chic-shades of lipsticks, including a timeless red and a signature Hermès orange. Shades for the lipsticks were hand-picked by Bali Barret, artistic director of Hermès’s women’s catalog, from their library of 75,000 silk and 900 leather swatches in order to find the perfect hues.
Additionally, the products are scented with a custom blend designed by Hermès’s legendary perfumer Christine Nagel. The formula will be available in two finishes, matte and satin, and will also include a lip pencil, lip brush, and a small mirror.
The products, which have been in production for the last two years, effortlessly display Hermès’s dedication to crafting luxurious and tactful beauty products.
The opulent, yet minimalistic packaging was designed by Hermès creative director of jewelry and shoes Pierre Hardy. Along with its sophisticated color-blocked appearance, the packaging features a refillable metal case.
“We wanted to do refillable so we could use more luxurious materials that had their own value,” Pierre Hardy told The Wall Street Journal. “The idea is a form that’s both simple and playful enough to allow it to be done and redone ad infinitum. It’s rare for an artistic director to think about packaging over a long period of time and not just a one-off.”
In homage to their iconic Birkin bag, the lipsticks will be packaged in a lacquered metal and Hermès signature “permabrass” hardware, also found on their handbags. Additionally, the brand plans to use plastic-free packaging for all their upcoming skincare and cosmetics launches.
As of now, their beauty line only includes lipsticks. They will retail for $67, with refills being $42. Fans who don’t live near a boutique will be able to find the lipsticks online and at select Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s. Hermès has also revealed they will launch a new category of beauty products every six months.
