Here Are The Biggest Food And Drink Trends From The Pandemic

Published on June 8, 2020

While it may seem like the pandemic has put a hold on many trends, you would be surprised at how many new trends have popped up, especially food and drink trends. As we all know, things are beginning to “almost” get back to normal with states beginning their re-opening on a case by case basis, but most of us and most places are continuing to adjust and adapt to our “new normal.” Many things have changed in our everyday lives, and we have become accustomed to those things and safely living out our lives as well as daily tasks.

Since the pandemic, there has been an unusual food and drink trend going around, and it isn’t about Dalgona coffee either. These trends don’t include panic buyers going into grocery stores and buying every bean, egg, or meat off the shelves. What we are talking about is what we are now adjusting to in our everyday lives, what is now as most people call it the “new normal” since the world has changed around us.

Vegan and Healthy Food

People’s food preferences have been changing dramatically since the start of the pandemic. When all of this started, everyone was going to the grocery stores and buying out most of what the grocery stores had. Which made people resort to buying other things. I noticed that my diet has changed because my grocery list has changed since most of the things that I usually bought were out of stock. According to the Food Industry Executive, when they survey people, 23% said they were now eating more plant-based meals due to limited options from their grocers.

Cocktail ‘Quarantini’

All bars, nightclubs, and restaurants have been closed, so most have bought beer and liquor and are looking up the booziest drink that they can find online to make. Let’s not forget the good ole saying, “it’s five o’clock somewhere,” and now we are all taking it quite literally. Also, liquor stores were open when everything started to shut down, which gave people access to make a lot of those ‘quarantini’s as they choose.

Food Delivery

As we’re confined to our homes and restaurants are closed for inside dining but open for curbside pickup, most have taken advantage of this curbside pickup or delivery. It’s nice to go out for a nice meal and sit down and enjoy your dinner, but now that restaurants have changed the way they are serving food, people are restoring to delivery apps and other methods to pick up food. According to Axios Between February and March, the percentage of parents using delivery apps increased from 16% to 20%, while non-parents saw their share increase from 27% to 28%, CivicScience noted.

Home Cooking

Now, this is a big one as everyone is getting used to the idea of being stuck at home so most people have been cooking at home more than what they are used to. With restaurants closed and grocery stores still open of, course, and the internet right at your fingertips, here come the new kitchen creations.

A recent study by HUNTER, 54% are cooking more, and 46% are baking more; 50% are more confident in the kitchen, and 26% are learning more about cooking. While 35% enjoy cooking more than ever, and 38% enjoy cooking as much as ever. Yes, these numbers are real. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy a nice home-cooked meal once and a while?
