HBO Announces Game of Thrones Documentary

Published on March 27, 2019

Things are heating up for Game of Thrones, which is about to release its final season in just a few weeks. The long-awaited season will bring the hit series to a close, and fans are eager to find out who dies. HBO isn’t going to let the franchise go that easily, though. The company has already confirmed the arrival of a prequel series to air at some point in the not-so-distant future. Now, with the series’ end in the immediate future, a documentary has been added to the list of upcoming content.

A documentary about the production of Season 8 will air one week after the show finale on HBO. The TV network announced the documentary on Wednesday to tease the upcoming premiere of the final season. Fans have waited nearly two years for the arrival of the final season, which will premiere in just a couple of weeks on Sunday, April 14 on HBO. In true Game of Thrones fashion, things have been extremely tight-lipped.

Game of Thrones Documentary

The Game of Thrones documentary will follow the making of the final season throughout the last couple years of filming and production. Sound boring? It won’t just take fans through the production process of filming one of the most expensive shows in history. It will also provide a never-before-seen behind the scenes look at the process. Exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, as well as insight into how the show is made (like those dragons) will give fans a whole new experience.

The documentary is officially titled Game of Thrones: The Last Watch and follows the filming journey throughout the production of season 8. The description for the documentary describes Season 8 as one of the most ambitious television projects yet. With four episodes clocking in just under feature-length, there’s a lot of ambiguity in a message like that.

“Made with unprecedented access, Game of Thrones: The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers,” reads the press release for the documentary that was released by HBO on Wednesday.

Season 8 – What We Know

Anyone who has looked back on previous seasons understands that the show is famous for laying it out on the table in the most ambiguous way. HBO has been extremely quiet about the details of what will happen in season 8. The network has curated a very careful image of what viewers can expect as they dive into it on April 14.

So far, we don’t know much. Countless fan theories and well thought out think pieces about what will happen have surface in recent weeks. The cast, however, hasn’t revealed anything noteworthy. The six part season will feature episodes of different lengths each week. A set of promotional posters for the show teased each character sitting atop the iron throne, maybe to throw fans off about who will win the game of thrones (someone much nerdier than I can detail any hints about who that will be).

The Game of Thrones documentary, Game of Thrones: The Final Watch is set to premiere on May 26 on HBO. The documentary comes just one week after the series finale on May 19. The prequel to Game of Thrones is set to premiere on HBO in 2020.
