'Hamilton' is Coming to Disney+ This Summer

Published on May 12, 2020

Get ready to stream Hamilton over and over again starting in July. The masterful hit musical is coming to Disney+ this summer now. A filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical was going to debut on the streaming service in October, but lucky for all of us, Disney+ has changed the release date to July.

The Big News

Disney was going to release the filmed version in theaters, as well, in October, 2021. Former Disney CEO, Bob Iger, and one of the show’s creators, Lin-Manuel Miranda, shared the great news on Good Morning America that Hamilton is coming to home this summer. July 4th weekend is going to be a whole lot more fun now.

The Coronavirus

The coronavirus is a part of the reason why Disney made the decision to release the filmed version of the play sooner than later. In a press release, Mirana expressed his joy over the decision:

“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house. I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

A $75 Million Dollar Price Tag

The film version of the hit musical, which won 11 Tonys, was bought by Disney at the beginning of the year. Disney paid $75 million dollars for the worldwide rights to the filmed version. No studio has ever spent more money than much money on acquiring a finished film. It was a landmark deal. Disney still plans on releasing the movie into theaters, so theater owners will see some profit from Hamilton whenever the studio moves forward with a theatrical release. Disney beat out several competitors to acquire the movie, which is two hours and 40 minutes in total.

Now We Can All Talk About Hamilton

Before Broadway was shut down due to the coronavirus, Hamilton remained the hottest ticket in the city. It was the highest seller for years. Over 2.6 million people have seen the play, adding up to $636 million in ticket sales. The musical has traveled to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major cities.

Unfortunately, it’s always been an incredibly expensive ticket. Most people aren’t fortunate enough to experience the show, but now with Disney+, they can. Everyone will soon understand “the room where it happens” and — my personal favorite — “Say No To This.” One downside is, however, Disney+ will bleep the F-word in the musical. It’ll probably be a distraction. It’s not exactly a Disney-friendly musical, so maybe they weren’t the right home for the musical. Then again, with that Disney brand and power, people all over the world will now get to see Hamilton

Which is great because Hamitlon is even better than the hype surrounding it. Miranda’s musical is already a modern classic for good reason. Song after song is a killer. It’s both fun and educational, plus the end is pure emotional waterworks. Hamilton is a masterwork everyone should experience. It’s a musical brimming with life and creativity. It’s Hamilton for a reason.
