Lady Gaga to Star in Ridley Scott’s ‘Gucci’ Movie

Published on April 8, 2020

Ridley Scott’s Gucci movie starring Lady Gaga? Sign us up. Years ago, Scott began developing a biopic about the murder of the fashion icon Maurizio Gucci. Initially, there were some complications involved, especially with the family and the brand, but Scott has returned to the true story. MGM Studios is now behind the movie, which will star Gaga.

Feeling Gucci

MGM was lucky to acquire the project. Scott considered directing his first movie for a streaming platform — no thanks — because Netflix and at least one other streaming platform were in the running for Gucci. Thankfully, MGM acquired the movie, because who would want to watch a Ridley Scott movie about Gucci on Netflix? According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Scott wanted his vision on the big screen. That’s how MGM won it.

The Story

Gaga is set to star as Patrizia Reggiani, who was Gucci’s ex-wife. She orchestrated the murder of Gucci following an affair he had. The biopic is written by Roberto Bentivegna and based on the novel, “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed.” The book is an epic look at the family’s complex, sometimes ridiculous history. It’s a story so big it could easily be a TV show, but Scott is no stranger to giving epic stories the time they deserve on the big screen.

Release Date

If anyone could keep making movies forever, it’s Ridley Scott. The man never slows down. The filmmaker behind Blade Runner, Alien, and Thelma & Louise movies at lightspeed, especially compared to most directors at his level. He hasn’t even finished shooting his next movie yet, The Last Duel (starring Boston bros, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck). Production on the medieval drama was put on pause due to the coronavirus. Once the pandemic ends, Scott will finish The Last Duel and move on to direct Gucci. He’s got a tight schedule, though, because already Gucci has a release date: November 24th, 2021.

Gucci is a longtime passion project for both Scott and his wife and producer, Giannnina Scott, who said in a statement:

“This project has long been a labor of love for both Ridley and me. The story is so epic, the stakes so high and the characters so richly drawn that we were determined to get it to the big screen. To say we are thrilled to be teaming with Mike De Luca and his brilliant film group at MGM is an understatement. We can’t wait to see this come to life next year.”

Producer Michael De Luca added:

“Nothing typifies bold, audacious originality more than a film by Ridley Scott. All of us at MGM are incredibly excited to be in business with Ridley, Giannina, Kevin and the whole team at Scott Free.”

A Perfect Pairing

Both Scott and Gaga are titans of their industry, which makes it fitting they’d together tackle the story of a titan in fashion. They probably have a little more understanding of the fashion world than the average director-star duo, especially Gaga. One thing is for sure, there’s no chance Ridley Scott makes a Gucci movie that doesn’t look incredible. Just imagine how good all those clothes are going to look through Scott’s picture-perfect point-of-view.

As for Gaga, she blew audiences away with her performance in A Star is Born. As an actress, she had a couple of forgettable gigs up until then, but she lived up to the title of Bradley Cooper’s remake as far as her acting career goes. Since Gucci will be her followup performance to her beloved breakout role, expectations are high, but knowing Scott and Gaga, they’ll exceed expectations. We cannot wait to see what these two artists do with the world of Gucci.
