Erykah Badu Opens Badu World Market

Published on February 8, 2020

Is there anything artist Erykah Badu can’t do? Well, some would say release a new album, but what’s the rush? Badu is an artist who goes at her own pace, as she should, and nobody should rush art. She’s given the world plenty of music to enjoy until the day a new Badu album drops in our hands anyway, so fans should remain patient and happy with what they already have. Plus, fans can expect to see more from Badu on February 20th when her new online store, Badu World Market, opens up. There’s one item, in particular, that’s grabbed the Internet’s attention already.

Badu’s Original Incense

The store will sell music merchandise (huzzah!), rose quartz, a turquoise-infused water bottles, grills like Badu’s, and products from Badu’s own clothing line, Fuh. She’s also releasing an incense named – wait for it – “Badu’s Pussy.” Why be subtle, right? Badu explained the incense and its smell to 10 Magazine

“I took lots of pairs of my panties, cut them up into little pieces and burned them. Even the ash is part of it…The people deserve it. There’s an urban legend that my pussy changes men. The men that I fall in love with, and fall in love with me, change jobs and lives.”

Let’s Ponder This

Where oh where to begin? First of all, it’s a great idea, especially commercially. The store hasn’t even opened yet and it’s getting loads of publicity because of “Badu’s pussy.” Badu is, after all, a boundary-pushing artist, so the brand and its name are on brand. She’s always doing something new.

It’s a much fresher, more inventive way to connect with fans than, say, Post Malone’s own flavor of Doritos. A snack won’t make fans feel closer to the star, but Badu’s incense, well, what’s more personal than that? When asked if it was personal, Badu said, “The people deserve it!” See, she’s always looking out for the consumer. Does anyone else in the music business have as good of a sense of humor as Badu does? Doubtful. She was even hilarious in last year’s overlooked comedy, What Men Want

Badu Market

Badu went on to add the store is “encourage networking among smaller brands and prestigious art houses,” and that it’s “a hub to share space with all people.” There’ll be perfume, clothing, and based on the incense, Lord knows what else.

Badu is one of those artists who manages to stay present in pop culture without any new music but with her voice and presence. Sometimes her words cause controversy, but more often than not, inspiration. She’s never ceasing to create something new and bold, even on her Instagram page. She keeps her fanbase happy by always having her distinct and powerful voice in the world, whether on social media or elsewhere.

Erykah Badu’s Upcoming Birthday Show

Badu tends to announce concert dates sporadically, appearing at festivals or a handful of venues over a month or so. She hasn’t done an epic tour in a while. If fans want to catch her in her element, though, and in her home, they can soon do so. Every year Badu performs on her birthday in Dallas, Texas, at the Bomb Factory. It’s a massive celebration of Badu, artists, and family and friends. Comedian Dave Chappelle doesn’t miss it for a reason. The show goes on and on until The Bomb Factory forces Badu and everyone else to go home, at least that’s what happened last year. It’s a night of pure artistry and positivity, a feeling only Badu herself could produce. She’s one-of-a-kind, and her store and personal incense is sure to be as well.
