Business administration is an industry with many decades of transformation. As the enterprise world continues to evolve, Dr. Richard G. Linowes remains ahead of the curve. With over 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Linowes blends the best strategies of his industry with technological and academic prowess. His past work and spearheading of Clarewood University encourages the next generation of leaders to represent the sector he has long served and supported.

Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in cybernetics in 1973 at Princeton University, Dr. Linowes saw the potential for artificial intelligence. In 1975, he received a Master of Science in computer and communication sciences at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Later, he lengthened his academic endeavors at Harvard Business School, earning a Doctor of Business Administration in 1984. Following this experience, Dr. Linowes set out on a mission to prevent unethical activity in the business world.

Before pursuing his master’s degree, Dr. Linowes worked in Japan as a management affiliate of Panasonic in 1974. From 1975 to 1977, he was a systems analyst at Arthur Andersen & Co. in Washington, D.C. At this accounting firm, he served as a senior systems analyst. Once he completed his work and studies, he commenced his professorial career at Goldman Sachs on Wall Street. Following several years in investment banking, Dr. Linowes returned to university life at the Kogod School of Business at Washington, D.C.’s American University from 1986 to 2019. Over the last five decades, Dr. Linowes’ scholarly contributions included authoring and editing many papers and books related to his area of expertise. Since 2016, he has served as the president and founding professor of Clarewood University in Reston, Virginia.

Dr. Linowes served at the Foreign Services Institute, a part of the United States Department of State, training diplomats for their overseas assignments beginning in 2003. Among his most prestigious achievements, he gained supplemental recognition in 1989 with his Fulbright Fellowship for Pedagogical Innovation in New Zealand. He also extended the Baldrige National Quality Award in 1994 to the field of education. Dr. Linowes shares additional pride as a keynote speaker in the inaugural meeting of the Kogod Alumni Network of Greater New York.

Over the years, Dr. Linowes noticed many ethical issues in the business world. While he actively works to rectify these predicaments, he understands there is still much work to be done. Alongside his efforts to restructure the industry, he served as the editor for volumes one through five of “Portraits of Small Businesses from the Developing World.” These impactful volumes were released between 1994 and 2010. He also obtained the role of contributing author with his articles featured in prominent books highlighting business in Japan — “Japanese Direct Investment in the United States” in 1992 and “Emerging Trends in Japanese Business” in 1994. Between his authoring and editing endeavors, he appeared on the PBS program in 1993 for “Writing Across the Curriculum.”

As Dr. Linowes reflects on Clarewood University’s development, he celebrates the institution’s latest accomplishment in receiving accreditation. While he already showcases his five decades of expertise in international business, quality management and cross-cultural relations, Dr. Linowes projects excitement for the future of Clarewood University. Within the next five years, he hopes to see it flourish in training enlightened leaders for business and government.
