‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Will Be Back for Season 11

Published on December 23, 2020

Curb Your Enthusiasm had an excellent tenth season this year. Larry David was back in great form after a strangely inconsistent season nine. David returned with a bang by delivering one of the best seasons of the show, in which he somehow made David and his world all the more uncomfortable and hilarious. Thankfully, HBO’s comedic golden goose will return.

Season 11

Curb Your Enthusiasm is now 20 years old, making it HBO’s longest running show in history. With the new season, the series will soar past 100 episodes. The main supporting cast — J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, Ted Danson, and Richard Lewis — are all expected to return for the next season.

The Writing Has Already Begun

The writing process for Curb Your Enthusiasm is a little different from most major comedies. The episodes are almost entirely improvised, but the plotlines are written out. Already, David is working on stories for season eleven. In a statement, the star and creator of the show expressed his dismay at his show’s renewal:

“Believe me, I’m as upset about this as you are. One day I can only hope that HBO will come to their senses and grant me the cancellation I so richly deserve.”

Amy Gravitt, the Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, added:

“This past season tapped into the zeitgeist in such an uncomfortably delightful way. Larry is already busy writing, and we can’t wait to see what he has in store.”

HBO Won’t Stop Until David Will

The news of an eleventh season shortly after season ten wrapped is fantastic news. Between season nine and ten, David took years off. It was unclear if the show would ever return. HBO was waiting on David to give the greenlight, not the other way around. Much to our viewing pleasure, David has been very inspired lately to keep Curb Your Enthusiasm going. The brass at HBO have always said they’ll keep the show on as long as its creator wants to keep making it. As HBO’s Casey Bloys’ explained:

“The deal with Larry is that he tells us when he is ready to go. If he tells us he wants to do more, we’ll do more. He doesn’t die or anything [in Season 10], I can reveal that now. There is nothing that would prevent [more seasons]. He’s thinking about what he wants to do.”

Which raises the question, would we ever see the death of Larry David on television? Personally, I want to see David keep making the show until he’s in his 80s or 90s, but David confronting death in a season of Curb…that’d be an interesting turn for a final season, if David ever chooses to do one.

Why We May Not Ever Seen an “End”

What’s great about Curb Your Enthusiasm is that it ended after, say, season ten or eight, it would’ve had fantastic endings. It would’ve ended with Larry David being Larry David. No major closure or loose ends tied up. A natural conclusion is always David just doing his thing, with people annoying him and him annoying them.

The finales for season eight and ten already played as excellent endings, in case David decided not to continue. The show’s creator explained in the past after the reception of the Seinfeld ending, he’s not too interested in writing a proper ending. There are too many expectations involved. With that in mind, David can always keep the door open for more Curb Your Enthusiasm
