Columbus Crew SC fall to Montreal Impact as they were unable to capitalize on many chances in front of the net. This was the home opener for Montreal in which they’ve only lost 1 game since joining the MLS in 2012.
Columbus held the majority of possession at 56.8%, they also had 7 corners compared to Montreal’s 2. The story for the Crew was missed opportunities: Federico Higuain (22’), Gyasi Zardes (39’), and Robinho Barbosa (26’,52’).
Montreal’s goal came from Harry Novillo assisted by Maxi Urruti in the 55th minute, which was created off a miscued pass. Columbus have not performed well against Montreal, since 2014 they have a record of 1-4-0.
With the appearance in today’s match, Waylon Francis reached his 100th regular-season appearance and 86th start since joining the league in 2014. Of the 100, 89 of these have come with Crew SC. Francis played the entire 90 minutes and had three tackles which was more than any other player for the Crew.
Steffen’s Steak Comes To An End
Zack Steffen’s shutout streak came to an end in the 55th minutes today against Montreal. The streak first began in the 6th minute of a home match against New York Red Bulls on March 2nd. The streak of not allowing a goal for 499 minutes is now second on the Crew’s all-time regular-season shutout streak only behind his own streak of 525-minutes. Steffen currently has six starts in the regular-season and holds four shutouts.
Wil Trapp Post-Match
“…the goal happened and it got extremely tight, they were even more organized and a little more compact in their blocks, and it just became difficult...,” stated Wil Trapp
