The surprise sequel to Borat hasn’t even debuted on Amazon Prime yet and it’s already creating chatter online. Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan is the long-winded title of the comedy. The sequel is full of shocking, depressing, and hilarious scenes, but it’s a scene involving the former Mayor of New York City and the lawyer of President Donald Trump, Rudy W. Giuliani, that is already making headlines and trending on Twitter.
The scene involving Giuliani comes near the very end of the movie, so it is a spoiler. To start, the sequel is about Borat and his 15-year-old daughter, played by 25-year-old Maria Bakalova, who he wants to give to Vice President Pence as a gift. After a failed attempt of gifting her to Pence, he decides Giuliani is a suitable replacement. Borat’s daughter becomes a journalist and lands an interview with Giuliani towards the end of the film.
The mayor is flirtatious. When the actress suggests they continue to drink in the bedroom, the mayor agrees. He sits and lays down on the bed, as Borat’s daughter removes his mic. Giuliani untucks his shirt not long after telling her he’ll “relax her.” When the attorney is lying on the bed and visibly has his hand down his pants, Borat bursts in screaming, “She’s only 15!” Giuliani quickly tucks his shirt in and leaves the room. The former Mayor denied he was inappropriate.
However, there’s a shot of Giuliani reaching into his pants. He argues he was tucking his shirt in as he was lying down on a bed. “The Borat video is a complete fabrication,” the former mayor tweeted. “I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment. At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar. In fact, the NY Post today reports ‘it looks to me like an exaggeration through editing.’ As soon as I realized it was a set up I called the police, which has been noted in THR article on July 8th. This is an effort to blunt my relentless exposure of the criminality and depravity of Joe Biden and his entire family. Deadline Hollywood reports CAA had a distribution screening in September where there was no mention of the scene holding any importance.”
The scene is now the most trending topic on Twitter as well. Once the film is finally available, it’ll be the most talked-about scene in the movie, which is saying something. During the scene, Borat also tells the former mayor of New York City to stick to marrying his cousins. In 1968, Giuliani married his second cousin, Regina Peruggi. Months ago, Giuliani even discussed the Borat incident with The New York Post. “I only later realised it must have been Sacha Baron Cohen,” he said. “I thought about all the people he previously fooled and I felt good about myself because he didn’t get me.”
There’s plenty more in the sequel to get people talking. Similar to the original film, Cohen targets ignorance, racism, and antisemitism. Borat manages to show the worst in people with hilarious and depressing results. The sequel isn’t as uproarious as the original, but it’s still funny, ballsy, and a snapshot of our times. For good reason, Cohen wanted his sequel to premiere before the upcoming election.
