Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni Teased a Benson and Stabler Reunion

Published on July 22, 2020

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit fans were given the ultimate gift this week when Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni posted a selfie together on social media to confirm that a Benson and Stabler reunion is indeed happening. Meloni’s appearance on Law & Order: SVU will apparently come before the premiere of his own Law & Order spinoff show, Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Fans of Special Victims Unit have long been asking for a reunion of Detectives Benson and Stabler ever since Meloni left the show back in 2011. The show, which is currently in its 21st season, has been running since 1999 and is one of the most successful police dramas of all time. The “ripped from the headlines” police procedural drama is the most successful in the Law & Order franchise, and has tackled some of the most high profile legal cases in the last couple of decades.

Meloni originally left the show after the show failed to come to a negotiation with his contract for the upcoming season. Hargitay has since been on the show, taking over as the lead character among a new generation of detectives working in the Special Victims Unit. Meloni and Hargitay’s characters were detective partners for years on the show before Meloni’s departure.

In a selfie posted to Instagram, Hargitay confirmed that the two would be reuniting on the show before Meloni’s new spinoff airs this fall on NBC. The caption of the selfie reads “It’s on,” and features the two embracing side by side. Little else is known about the reunion, though Meloni has spoken about what fans of the show can expect from the reunion when it airs, revealing that it will likely be emotional for fans that never really got to say goodbye to the character back in 2011 (Meloni was abruptly written out of the show with little anticipation after his character was placed on administrative leave for shooting a girl by accident, only to never be seen again).

Law & Order: Organized Crime is set to air on NBC this fall with new episodes airing on Wednesday nights at 10 pm. The SVU reunion has not had an official premiere date, but fans can expect it to come before the premiere of Meloni’s new show.
