‘Becoming’: New Netflix Documentary About Michelle Obama

Published on April 28, 2020

For those who try to find something new on Netflix but feel like they have seen everything available, here’s some good news! Former First Lady, Michelle Obama will have a new documentary out on May 6th. It’s called Becoming and follows the same title to her biography which was published in 2018.

Since her childhood in Chicago, it’s noticeable how education was present in life and encouraged by her parents. The book, Becoming is really about how her personality was shaped and an identification with her and people introduced in the book. It’s a good idea to read it whenever you’re free – another good tip during quarantine. Her documentary takes a bit of a different approach. It follows the journey of her 34-city tour in 2018 and takes you behind-the-scenes on the road. Michelle Obama is on a roll with the book turning documentary which also won a Grammy for the best audiobook this year!

Setting The Stage For Her Story

Directed by Nadia Hallgren (also director of After Maria), this group of women seems to focus on empowerment. The new all-female production is important in many ways. Women in the movie industry need progress. So an all-female production is an idea that unites the society, industry, ethnicity, empowerment and feminism. All in one special package.

Michelle was the first African-American First Lady in the U.S. This already makes us think about her story and the strength it carries, especially for other men and women of color around the country. Therefore, she is a big supporter of education and black power, fighting against racism.

Another part of it is that Hallgren shares intimate moments with Michelle, giving us a look behind-the-scenes to make us feel like we are best friends with her. Check out the trailer released today by Netflix!
