A ‘John Wick 5’ Is Happening, Thank Heavens and Keanu Reeves

Published on August 6, 2020

John Wick is just a franchise that keeps on giving. The bloody, adrenaline-fueled but character-driven franchise all started with the death of a dog. With three movies, director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves have made one of the coolest and most beautiful action trilogies of all time. Now, the duo are already lining up two more John Wick sequels, which they’ll shoot back-to-back. Rejoice, fellow Wick fans.

John Wick 5

John Wick 4 is scheduled to come out on May 27th, 2022. The fourth film was delayed a year following COVID-19 impacting production, but a whole lot more John Wick is coming. During an earnings call, company CEO John Feltheimer revealed the great news of a fifth film:

“We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022.  We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 & 5 back to back when Keanu becomes available early next year.”

John Wick’s Future

How many John Wick movies will we actually see? Hopefully, the assassin and franchise just never die. Stahelski himself has said he’ll keep making these movies for as long as he can and as long as audiences enjoy them, as he told Entertainment Weekly:

“I enjoy making these movies because there’s no limit…We create our own mythology, and we have a studio (Lionsgate) that both stays out of our way and supports us on the wacky decisions. If people go see the movie, and it makes money, and they came back to us, Keanu and I have ideas for days. It’s a fun world. I could live here for the rest of my career. If people like it and want to watch more, I could think of way worse ways to spend your career. We’ll let the audience figure that out.”

With three movies, the John Wick universe already feels vast and infinite. There’s already so many colorful supporting characters and more to come. It’s a big, rich world with plenty more conflict and action for Mr. Wick. Keanu Reeves is almost 60, but look at Liam Neeson, Stallone, and others still starring in action movies. Imagine a John Wick approaching 70 one day, living with regret and having to do that one last job

The Wick TV Show

Lionsgate is well-aware of just how much people love this world. So much so that the studio is working on a television show set in the Wick universe. We don’t know much about the series yet, but it will “focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.” Director Len Wiseman, known for the early Underworld movies and the Total Recall remake, will produce and direct the pilot of the series.

Yes Please to More Mr. Wick

John Wick is a character and world that’s only gotten better since its early days. The first movie is a blast with such a strong, surprising motive with the loss of a dog’s life. The action is practical, intricate, and mind-blowingly good, but it all serves a purpose far beyond eye candy. It’s action with real weight, real stakes, and sometimes, real emotion.

With the second movie, the world grew much larger, but the franchise remained far more intimate and character-focused than most large-scale franchises. The series stayed true to itself in its biggest entry yet — the third movie — which continued to up both the action and the character. John Wick is a cool world with an even cooler character, which Keanu Reeves brings such power to through silence and hard punches. If the actor makes ten of these movies, we’ll gladly be there opening night for all of them.
