3D Printed Bones, Exoskeletons, and Sanitizer from Water: Ukrainian Social Impact Startups You Should Pay Attention To

Did you know that Ukraine’s IT industry is on a considerable upswing with over 4,000 tech companies? You should’ve heard about Grammarly, Readdle, MacPaw, Reface, Ajax, Depositphotos. These are all Ukrainian companies. That’s right. Also, Ukraine is considered as #1 outsourcing destination and has more than 200,000 highly skilled developers.

So, the country has a lot to offer. Being one of the emerging European hubs, Ukraine is rapidly evolving their relationships with the global tech clusters. Such as Israel.

Just recently, the third Ukrainian Israeli Innovation Summit took place. Driven by the Global Israeli Initiative, this is one of the key events to establish cooperation between Israel and Ukraine in the tech area. This year all the attention was focused on innovations aimed at finding solutions to overcome the consequences caused by the pandemic.

With the support of Sigma Software Labs, a pitch session of Ukrainian startups that develop social impact products was held within the summit. The teams had the opportunity to get on the radar of dozens of Ukrainian and Israeli investors, including such legendary Israeli tech investors as John Medved from OurCrowd and Yossi Vardi from DLD, Israel’s hi-tech ‘godfather,’ investor of the world’s first instant messaging platform, ICQ.

Without further ado, let’s dive deeper and take a look at these cool Ukrainian products.

A.D.A.M.

3D Printed Bones

“Technology that can change the face of medicine.” That is how this project’s website greets its users. Indeed, if the team manages to develop the idea and launch mass production of bones and organs on 3D printers, it will be a revolution in the world of medicine. After all, over the past 20 years, more than 150,000 people have died waiting for a transplant.

Although it all may look like some Westworld scenario, A.D.A.M. is on the verge of trials on animals right now.

The first investment was approximately $500,000. In January 2020, it was reported that the A.D.A.M. plans to raise $6 million for 20% of the capital, with an estimated value of $30 million. The first systems are scheduled for delivery not early until the spring of 2022.

Cardio.AI

Early detection of cardiovascular diseases

The idea of the Cardio.AI can already be traced back to its very name. It is a platform that uses artificial intelligence to read electrocardiograms automatically. The product includes three solutions at once: 1) a tool for clinical diagnostics; 2) remote patient monitoring; 3) ready-made software for digital medical devices and apps.

Cardio.AI was named one of the top five projects at the recent COVID Challenge Hackathon. The product not only automatically interprets electrocardiograms but also does so with high precision and less time.

Doctor Online

They create a dietology system together with wearable devices like Apple Watch. In essence, it is a comprehensive health monitoring system in a straightforward application that works 24/7.

The product has already been launched in 157 countries in 40 languages.

MindSelf

A meditation coach in your pocket

According to studies, every second Ukrainian faced some stressful situations in 2019. We assume this number got super high as of November 2020. And without proper support, 96% of people in the CIS region do not receive psychological help due to stigma and distrust or money time shortage.

To solve these problems, MindSelf is creating a personal meditation tool to manage stress and support mental well-being. It is a step-by-step mindfulness program for stress management, concentration, and balance.

What’s interesting, in addition to the main app, it offers to connect a special HR panel where you can add employees and monitor the progress of both an individual and the entire group. The company claims that its application improves the stress tolerance, understanding, and performance of any team.

Bimedis

eBay for medical professionals

Bimedis is the IT platform solution focused on the “second-hand medical equipment market.” According to the company’s research, the current market is not efficient. Bimedis offers to eliminate the intermediaries and resellers, thus decreasing the purchasing cost of used devices.

The project aims to become an indispensable tool in emerging markets that cannot afford to invest in new medical equipment. The service focuses on the global market. The interface is available in 7 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Ukrainian, Romanian, and Russian.

Qardiax

Preventing truck crashes with real-time monitoring of blood pressure

Truck drivers with high blood pressure are twice as likely to crash. Let’s take into account that 22% of such drivers are over the age of 60. The annual worldwide spent on such crashes is a staggering $12 billion.

What’s more puzzling is that humanity is on the brink of autonomous trucking. So, the drivers will push even harder to compete in productivity with the machines. This will cause even more accidents, and mandated safety requirements will get stricter.

Quardiax is trying to develop a real-time solution to monitor the drivers’ health to prevent heart attacks and strokes to avoid accidents. They’re planning to hit the market in March 2022.

UniExo

Ukrainian Exoskeleton inspired by Marvel’s Iron Man

Hundreds of millions of people need physical rehabilitation after accidents and neurological diseases. Only 3 out of 10 people are fully restored. 7 out of 10 these people receive ineffective, uncontrolled, and relatively expensive treatments. And as a result, they have problems with movements after rehab. And only one person out of 100 can afford and use an exoskeleton. As a result, treatment is unproductive. People feel unwell, do not return to a full life, and have problems with movements.

The young Ukrainian genius Anton Holovachenko is developing an exoskeleton to allow people with special needs to move around fully without assistance. He was inspired by the movie Iron Man when in 2013, his grandmother’s arm was paralyzed, and she needed expensive rehabilitation.

In late 2016, the startup won the Robohub Reader’s Pick award at the international Silicon Valley Robotics competition. A pre-order of the device is already available on the UniExo website, but prices and delivery dates are not mentioned.

Black Snow

Mobile AR game

At first glance, an unobvious participant in a thematic pitch session at the summit. But games have long been an integral part of our lives. Nearly 40% of the world’s population are gamers, one way or another. Games have become a cross-cultural, limitless, timeless phenomenon that brings together millions of people worldwide. And today, games have more social impact on inclusiveness and mental health than we can imagine. Especially during the lockdown period.

In Black Snow, you have to fight against aliens in an AR. It is a classic science fiction narrative about alien invasion with a uniquely immersive cinematic experience. Users can interact with large-scale augmented reality in their physical location as well as virtually travel in AR. Cool!

IOON

Sanitizer from water

‘Sanitizer’ definitely will be one of the words that will be associated with the year 2020. This is an essential attribute of our new daily life. Maybe that’s all for the best. And possibly, we will be able to get our hands clean all the time with devices such as IOON.

It is a pocket-size tool that creates sanitizer from ordinary water in one second. IOON makes a non-toxic and alcohol-free sanitizer that is safe for human skin, pets, and the environment. It looks like it’s effortless to use. All you need is to fill water into the device, turn it on and spray on any surface.

The startup won a grant of $25,000 from the Ukrainian Startup Fund. IOON is going to sell its gadget for $79. They promise to make a special low price for Ukraine. The specific price has not yet been announced.
